Net Tools è un set di utility (più di 175!!!) dedicate principalmente alla System Security ed al Networking (tradotto in parole povere, una quantità esagerata di strumenti utili ad un System Administrator). Consiste di un programma principale (scritto in Visual Basic 6) con un menù (configurabile) da cui si può accedere alle varie funzionalità del programma che sono in parte implementate nel .exe principale ed in parte nei vari eseguibili presenti nella cartella di installazione; i vari .exe sono stati creati con Visual Basic, Visual C++ ma anche C# ed in generale la piattaforma .NET; quindi per poter funzionare completamente Net Tools necessita del .Net Runtime. Questo nuovo sistema arriva dopo che ormai 15 giorni fà gli autori di Cryptload erano riusciti a realizzare un riconoscimento automatico della stringa alfa-numerica contenente i "Gattini".

Penso che sia giunto il momento di rimetter mano a questo Blog che sta facendo la muffa. Proprio in questo istante mi è venuto in mente un applicativo che 3 anni or sono avevo realizzato: la problematica era quella di estrarre il contenuto testuale di un PDF. Dopo aver navigato un pò sul web (ed aver trovato soluzioni varie in vari ambienti) ero venuto a conoscenza di questa feature disponibile in ambiente Windows: la IFilter Interface. In pratica si tratta di una Interface che Microsoft ha creato per interagire con l'Indexing Service di Windows. L'obiettivo principale è definire uno standard per l'estrazione di testo da file: in questo modo un determinato tipo di file (ad esempio un Pdf, un file di Office, etc...) può essere indicizzato e soprattutto sottoposto a ricerca di testo al suo interno. Quando ad esempio si esegue una ricerca di testo o di determinate proprietà su un elenco di file tramite la funzione di ricerca di Windows, il Search di Windows scansiona i file e per ognuno di essi va a vedere se è disponibile un Filtro (ossia un oggetto COM che implementa la IFilter Interface) per quel tipo di file ed in caso affermativo chiama l'implementazione dei metodi della IFilter Interface forniti dal Filtro per estrarre il testo (o più in generale quello che si vuole che rappresenti il contenuto testuale del file in questione). Idem per le Proprietà del file. Disponendo quindi di un Filtro per un determinato formato di file, possiamo estrarre il testo e contemporaneamente quel formato di file sarà ricercabile nell'ambito di una ricerca col Search di Windows (proprio perchè grazie alla presenza del Filtro è possibile estrarne un contenuto testuale).
